Product Description

Where thinner boards in the Unilin Thin-R range are often fitted between timbers, 80mm Unilin PIR Insulation Board is more commonly laid as a continuous layer: across a concrete floor slab with a screed on top, over rafters in a warm pitched roof, or as an unbroken plane over an existing roof deck or ceiling. That continuous approach eliminates the thermal bridging that occurs through timber when insulation is fitted between joists or studs, and at a thermal resistance of 3.60 m²K/W the 80mm board contributes enough to U-value calculations that it is frequently the primary (and sometimes the only) rigid insulation layer in the build-up.

The board is a rigid polyisocyanurate (PIR) sheet measuring 2400mm x 1200mm x 80mm, covering 2.88m² per board. Declared thermal conductivity is 0.022 W/mK. The square-edged profile allows boards to be laid tightly against one another across large areas with minimal gapping, and at 80mm the board has a noticeably solid, rigid feel that holds its position on a slab or deck during installation without flexing or shifting.

On both sides of the closed-cell PIR core, low-emissivity composite aluminium foil facings are autohesively bonded during manufacture. The gas-tight seal locks in the insulating gas within the foam cells, preserving the declared thermal performance over the full service life of the building. Vapour resistance exceeds 300 MNs/gm, which helps limit moisture vapour movement through the insulation layer, though the foil facings are thermal facings and not a substitute for a separate vapour control layer where the specification requires one.

80mm Unilin PIR handles a compressive load of 150 kPa at 10% compression (to BS EN 826), making it a natural choice for ground floor constructions where the board sits beneath a sand-and-cement or liquid screed, and for underfloor heating installations where it directs warmth upward into the living space. It is equally suited to pitched roof over-rafter systems, flat roofs, timber and steel framed walls, and internal wall linings. A damp-proof membrane should be provided beneath the board in ground floor constructions. The closed-cell core will not rot, take on moisture or lose performance over time, and the board is CFC and HCFC free with zero ozone depletion potential. Score and snap or cut with a fine-toothed insulation saw, stagger the joints, tape where the specification calls for it, and follow the latest Unilin technical guidance throughout. Can you stick PIR boards straight to the wall?

No, the boards can't be attached directly to the wall, you need to place wooden battens to the wall to affix the PIR. It is recommended that you have at least a 50mm air gap between the wall and the insulation

Do you sell Xtratherm PIR insulation?

Unilin is the new name for Xtratherm, so if Xtratherm was your go to brand, you are still getting the same board, just a new name!

What is PIR?

PIR stands for polyisocyanurate and is a rigid foam board insulation. It is a closed cell foam structure

It says the that PIR insulation is suitable for walls, can I use this as a cavity wall?

The standard PIR boards can be used for cavity wall insulation, but you will need to cut them to size, ensure you have cavity batts to ensure a 50mm air gap. We recommend using either Eurowall+ full fill cavity boards or Eurowall partial fill cavity insulation board

How do I know what thickness of PIR insulation I need?

The thickness of your insulation board will be dependent on a few factors. Is your insulation for walls, floors or a pitched roof, how much space is there and what u value do you need to achieve. Hi do I calculate a U value?

U-values are determined for various building elements, including walls, floors, roofs, windows, and door and calculating U values can be daunting. Is PIR better than expanded polystyrene insulation (EPS)?

Can you paint straight onto PIR boards?

No, if you are using PIR as a wall insulation, we recommend using plasterboard

and a plaster like British Gypsum Thistle Multi Finish Plaster 25kg

once the wall is plastered then you can decorate.

Is cutting PIR insulation messy?

If you need to cut your PIR to fit a particular size, then be aware it can be a messy job. Make sure any floor is covered you can use floor protection

If the PIR board has a foil facing do I need DPM?

When using PIR insulation as a floor insulation, you will need a DPM, you can shop DPM rolls here

Does the PIR board have writing on?

Yes, the PIR board normally has the manufacturers name written on it.

I need to cut my PIR does it have any lines to ensure a straight cut?

Yes the PIR board has grid lines to enable you to cut it correctly.

How do I place an order with Insulation UK?

How do I know what’s happening with my order and when I will receive it?

When you have placed your order, you will then receive an email confirmation, giving you an order reference number and asking you to double check everything is correct on your order such as delivery address, quantities etc. If there are any amendments to be made, then please reply to your confirmation email with any details.

Once the team has processed the order you will receive an email with a BY delivery date, this is the latest date you will receive your delivery.

Do you offer next-day delivery?

How much does delivery cost and how long will it take?

Do you deliver nationwide?

Will the driver help unload the insulation products?

Most of our deliveries are made with vehicles with mechanical off-load (known as a moffett or fork-lift), the driver will leave them in a safe place of your choice. They will help as much as they are allowed but are not insured to bring anything into a property.

What happens if my order arrives damaged or incomplete?

In the unlikely event your order arrives damaged, then please contact within 48 hours at sales@insulationuk.co.uk with any images of the damage and the team will be in touch. If there is anything missing, then notify the team within 48 hours on 03003 034 578

What if my order doesn’t arrive and I have paid for trades to be on site, can I claim anything towards the costs I have incurred?

We advise not to have trades booked in and around the day of your delivery. Things can happen beyond our control, and your delivery may be delayed or abandoned. We cannot be held liable for any consequential loss such as tradesman wages etc.

Physical Properties

Compressive strength shows how well a product resists being squashed under pressure.

The figure is measured in kPa, which stands for kilopascals.

A higher kPa number means stronger resistance to compression. For example, 120 kPa offers more compression resistance than 70 kPa, but less than 150 kPa, 200 kPa or 300 kPa.

This does not mean the product can carry that load on its own. It should always be checked as part of the full floor, wall, roof or system build-up.

Fire Performance

Euroclass reaction to fire is the European EN 13501-1 classification used to show how a construction product behaves when exposed to fire.

The main scale runs from A1 and A2 at the highest end, through B, C, D and E, down to F.

A1 is non-combustible and A2 is limited combustibility, while lower classes indicate a greater contribution to fire.

Euroclass F is the lowest rating on this scale and indicates the weakest reaction-to-fire performance.
