Why Choose Tapered Edge Plasterboard

  • Ready for jointing and skimming. The tapered edges create a shallow channel that is filled with jointing compound and tape, leaving no visible seam once finished.
  • Smooth, professional results. Ideal for walls and ceilings where a flat, painted finish is the goal.
  • Suitable for DIY and trade use. Straightforward to cut, fix and finish using standard drywall tools.
  • Available in 9.5mm and 12.5mm thicknesses to suit ceilings, walls and partitions.
  • Compatible with timber studs and metal framing systems across all standard drylining constructions.
  • Recyclable gypsum and paper materials. Boards are fully recyclable at end of life.
  • Trusted brands in stock. British Gypsum (Gyproc), Siniat and Insulation UK boards all available.

What Is Tapered Edge Plasterboard?

Tapered edge plasterboard is the standard board type used when you plan to joint and skim the finished surface. Along the long edges of each board, the paper face is gradually tapered, meaning it is slightly thinner at the edges than in the centre. When two boards are placed side by side, those tapered edges meet to create a shallow, flat-bottomed channel between them.

That channel is filled with jointing compound, a length of jointing tape is bedded in and a skim coat of finish plaster is applied over the top. The result is a completely flat, seamless wall or ceiling with no visible join between boards. This is the most common way to finish interior walls and ceilings in the UK and tapered edge plasterboard is what makes it possible.

Tapered edge boards are different from square edge boards, which are used where the finish is applied over the entire board surface rather than just at the joints. Browse the full standard plasterboard range to compare both edge types.

Tapered Edge Plasterboard Range

We stock tapered edge plasterboard from British Gypsum, Siniat and our own Insulation UK range, all designed to deliver a high-quality finish for walls and ceilings across new build and renovation projects.

British Gypsum Gyproc Tapered Edge Wallboard

The most widely used plasterboard brand in the UK. Gyproc Wallboard Tapered Edge is a standard gypsum board with a smooth white paper face on the front and a grey paper liner on the back. Suitable for most internal wall and ceiling applications, it accepts a direct skim or can be jointed, taped and decorated. Available in 9.5mm and 12.5mm in the standard 2.4m x 1.2m sheet size.

Siniat Tapered Edge Plasterboard

Siniat is one of the leading plasterboard manufacturers in the UK, offering a dependable range of tapered edge boards for internal walls and ceilings. Siniat boards cut and fix cleanly and are available in a range of thicknesses to suit different applications and project requirements.

Insulation UK Tapered Edge Plasterboard

Our own Insulation UK tapered edge plasterboard offers competitive performance at a practical price point. Designed for standard drylining applications, these boards are a reliable choice for DIY projects and larger renovation works where cost efficiency matters alongside finish quality.

Where to Use Tapered Edge Plasterboard

Tapered edge plasterboard is the right choice wherever the finished surface will be jointed, taped and skimmed. Common applications include:

  • Internal walls and stud partitions in living rooms, bedrooms, hallways and home offices
  • Ceilings in new build and renovation projects where a flat skim finish is required
  • Dormer walls and sloped ceilings in loft conversions
  • Drylining over masonry walls as part of an insulated wall system
  • Garage conversions and utility rooms where a smooth painted finish is needed

For areas with high humidity such as bathrooms, kitchens and utility rooms, moisture resistant plasterboard is recommended instead.

Tapered Edge Plasterboard FAQs

What is the difference between tapered edge and square edge plasterboard?

Tapered edge boards have slightly bevelled long edges, creating a shallow channel at the joint designed to be filled with jointing compound and tape. Square edge boards have flat edges on all sides and are used where the entire board surface will be skimmed or where no jointed finish is required. Tapered edge is the standard choice for most jointed and skimmed wall and ceiling applications. Both types are available in the standard plasterboard range.

Can you skim tapered edge plasterboard directly?

Yes. Once the tapered edge joints are filled, taped and allowed to dry, the entire board surface can be skimmed with finish plaster. The skim coat is applied across the whole wall, producing a uniform flat surface ready for decoration. Finish plaster and jointing compounds are available in the plasterboard fixings and accessories range.

What size is standard tapered edge plasterboard?

The most common sheet size in the UK is 2400mm x 1200mm (2.4m x 1.2m), available in 9.5mm and 12.5mm thicknesses. This size is designed to span standard stud spacings of 400mm and 600mm centres with minimal cutting required.

Can you use tapered edge plasterboard in a bathroom?

Tapered edge plasterboard is not recommended for bathrooms or other high-humidity spaces. For these areas, moisture resistant plasterboard is the correct specification. For shower enclosures and wet rooms with direct water exposure, tile backer boards provide a fully waterproof solution.
