Product Description
Product Description
15mm Fire Resistant Plasterboard (Tapered Edge) is the thickest fire-rated board in the range, a glass-fibre reinforced gypsum board for lining internal walls, partitions and ceilings that have to hold back fire as well as take a finish. It is the board to specify when a single layer needs to deliver more than a 12.5mm sheet can: the extra thickness lets one 15mm layer contribute up to 60 minutes of fire resistance within a tested system, so a higher rating can be reached without double-boarding.
Each board measures 2400mm x 1200mm x 15mm and covers 2.88m², sold per board, sized to sit at standard 400mm and 600mm stud and joist centres. Against the 12.5mm board it shares the full-sheet format and the tapered edge; what the extra 2.5mm changes is core mass, and that mass is what buys the longer single-layer fire period, greater rigidity across a span and a useful lift in acoustic performance. It is also the heaviest sheet in the range, so a full board is a firm two-person lift, with a board lifter worth having for ceiling work.
The fire performance comes from the core. It is an aerated gypsum core reinforced with glass fibre, and under fire the water chemically bound into the gypsum is released slowly as vapour, drawing off heat while the glass fibre holds the calcined board together rather than letting it break up. At 15mm there is simply more of that core in the way of the fire, which is what carries a single layer through to the higher rating. The tapered long edges then finish flush: scrim taped and filled for a seamless, paint-ready face, or skimmed over if you would rather plaster the lot.
15mm fire resistant plasterboard goes onto timber and metal stud partitions, wall linings and ceilings, and into separating walls, compartment walls, protected escape routes and steel encasement, wherever a higher single-layer fire rating is specified. It cuts by scoring and snapping or with a plasterboard saw and fixes with drywall screws, installed in line with the board manufacturer's guidance and the tested system in the project specification. Fire resistance is a property of the complete construction (board, framing, fixings, insulation and jointing), not of a board on its own, so it is the specified system that delivers the rated period: as a guide, a single 15mm layer reaches up to 60 minutes where a single 12.5mm layer gives up to 30.
Key Benefits of 15mm Fire Resistant Plasterboard:
- 15mm fire resistant gypsum plasterboard, the thickest fire board in the range, for internal walls, partitions and ceilings.
- A single 15mm layer contributes up to 60 minutes of fire resistance within a correctly specified system, twice the single-layer period of a 12.5mm board.
- Aerated gypsum core reinforced with glass fibre to maintain integrity at high temperatures.
- Tapered long edges tape and fill flush for a seamless, paint-ready finish, or take a full skim.
- Full 2400mm x 1200mm sheet covering 2.88m², sized to 400mm and 600mm stud and joist centres.
- Extra thickness adds rigidity across a span and lifts acoustic performance over a 12.5mm board.
- Non-combustible gypsum core, classified Euroclass A2-s1,d0 for reaction to fire.
- Cuts by scoring and snapping or with a plasterboard saw, and fixes with drywall screws to timber or metal stud.
- Reaches a higher single-layer rating without double-boarding, where the tested system allows.
- Insulation UK own-brand board at competitive trade pricing, with bulk pricing available.
Good to know:
- Fire resistance is a system property. The up-to-60-minutes figure is for a single 15mm layer in a correctly specified and tested system, not the board alone. Follow the manufacturer's tested system for your required rating.
- The heaviest board in the range. The thicker core makes a full sheet a firm two-person lift; a board lifter helps on ceilings.
- Tapered edge, not square. The recessed long edges are made for taping and jointing to a flush finish; ends and cut edges butt square and joint like any square joint.
- Not a moisture board. For bathrooms, wet rooms or damp, unheated spaces use a moisture-resistant board, and combine board types where both fire and moisture resistance are needed.
- Keep it flat and dry. Store boards flat, off the ground and protected from damp, and do not fix boards that have got wet.
When one 12.5mm layer will not make the rating, 15mm fire resistant plasterboard is the straightforward step up: a thicker fire core for up to 60 minutes from a single board, with the same flush taped finish and added rigidity into the bargain. It is the range's heavyweight, for where fire performance leads and a clean, paint-ready wall or ceiling still has to follow.
