Our Expert Says

170mm Knauf Loft Roll 44 is the roll most people need to meet building regulations in a straightforward two-layer install. Laid as a cross-laid layer over a 100mm base between the joists, it takes total depth to 270mm, the standard depth for the 0.16 W/m²K roof U-value target under Part L. With a thermal conductivity of 0.044 W/mK, a thermal resistance of 3.85 m²K/W and a Euroclass A1 non-combustible rating, it pairs reliable performance with the highest reaction-to-fire classification. The combi-cut format splits to 2 x 570mm or 3 x 380mm for 400mm or 600mm joist centres, or lays uncut as a full-width roll. Click for our full review

Product Description

Knauf Loft Roll 44 (170mm) is a glass mineral wool loft insulation roll for insulating cold pitched roofs at ceiling level, and it can also be used between joists in suspended timber floors. It is the most practical choice for reaching the standard loft depth in a two-layer installation: laid as a cross-laid layer over a 100mm base between the joists, it brings total depth to 270mm, the depth commonly used to meet the 0.16 W/m²K roof U-value target under Part L of the Building Regulations in England and Wales. Laying the second layer at right angles to the first helps reduce thermal bridging across the joists for more consistent coverage. Where higher performance or a greater depth is specified, a second 170mm cross-laid layer takes the total to 440mm.

Thermal conductivity is 0.044 W/mK and thermal resistance is 3.85 m²K/W, giving reliable thermal performance across loft applications. As a glass mineral wool, it also offers a degree of acoustic absorption, helping to soften airborne sound through the ceiling. Each roll measures 1140mm wide by 7.03m long and covers 8.01m², and carries a Euroclass A1 non-combustible reaction-to-fire classification, the best possible rating, meaning the product does not burn.

The combi-cut format means the roll is partially perforated to give widths of 2 x 570mm or 3 x 380mm, so it can be split to sit neatly between joists at standard centres or laid uncut as a full-width cross-laid layer. This reduces cutting and offcuts on site, speeding up installation and helping maintain continuous coverage with fewer gaps.

Manufactured using ECOSE® Technology, Knauf's bio-based binder, it contains no added formaldehyde or phenol, is CFC and HCFC free, and has zero ozone depletion potential. Made with up to 80% recycled glass content, it is one of the more environmentally responsible loft insulation products available. Modern manufacturing means it is classed as low itch and more pleasant to handle, though gloves and basic protection remain sensible when working with any mineral wool. Rot proof, odourless and non-hygroscopic, it will not attract rodents or support the growth of mould, fungi or bacteria, and will last for the lifetime of the building.

Install in line with the Knauf Loft Roll Installation Guide and the project specification, taking care not to block eaves ventilation. A full step-by-step walkthrough is available in the [loft insulation guide](LOFT INSULATION GUIDE LINK). Suitable for both new build and renovation work, it offers a straightforward route to improving loft thermal performance and reducing heat loss.

Product FAQs

What is the thermal conductivity of Knauf Loft Roll 44 170mm?

Knauf Loft Roll 44 170mm has a declared thermal conductivity of 0.044 W/mK and a thermal resistance (R-value) of 3.85 m²K/W.

What is the coverage of Knauf Loft Roll 44 170mm?

Each roll covers 8.01m². The roll is 7.03m long and 1.14m wide, available as 2 x 570mm or 3 x 380mm widths in combi-cut format.

What is the 170mm Knauf Loft Roll 44 used for?

It is designed as a cross-laid overlay layer, laid perpendicular to the 100mm base layer between joists. It is the most practical choice for achieving the minimum building regulation depth in a straightforward two-layer installation.

Does 170mm Knauf Loft Roll 44 meet building regulations?

When combined with a 100mm base layer between joists, a single 170mm cross-laid layer achieves exactly 270mm total depth — meeting the minimum required in England and Wales — with a U-value of 0.16 W/m²K. For Scotland, where 350mm is required, a second 170mm cross-laid layer brings total depth to 440mm and U-value to 0.10 W/m²K.

Is the 170mm the right roll for a two-layer loft insulation installation?

Yes — it is the most efficient choice for meeting the 270mm building regulation minimum in just two layers. Lay 100mm between the joists, then roll 170mm across the top at right angles and the job is done.

What fire rating does Knauf Loft Roll 44 170mm have?

It achieves a Euroclass A1 reaction to fire classification — the best possible rating, meaning the product is classified as non-combustible.

Is Knauf Loft Roll 44 170mm environmentally friendly?

Yes. It is manufactured with ECOSE® Technology using a bio-based binder with no added formaldehyde or phenol. It contains up to 80% recycled glass content, is CFC and HCFC free, and has zero ozone depletion potential.

I needed to top up my loft insulation after the plumbershad installed heat pump and two showers. The rolls came promptly and the delivery guy helped to put them in my garage. They cut easily and roll out a treat, inflating to the 200mm thickness. Good stuff!

Knauf Insulation Loft Roll 44 Combi Cut

This was better to handle than many, not particularly dusty or itchy, hence less irritation. The only usual irritation is the cost of loft roll, but as said, I found Knauff loft roll good to handle and would buy again

Thermal Performance

Thermal performance helps show how effectively the product reduces heat transfer.

Thermal conductivity measures how readily heat passes through the material, so lower figures generally indicate better insulating performance.

R Value shows the material’s thermal resistance at that thickness, so higher figures generally mean stronger insulation performance.

These figures relate to the insulation product itself and should be considered alongside the full wall, roof or floor build-up when checking project requirements.

Thermal Conductivity:
0.044 W/mK
R Value:
3.85 M²K/W
Fire Performance

Euroclass reaction to fire is the European EN 13501-1 classification used to show how a construction product behaves when exposed to fire.

The main scale runs from A1 and A2 at the highest end, through B, C, D and E, down to F.

A1 is non-combustible and A2 is limited combustibility, while lower classes indicate a greater contribution to fire.

Euroclass F is the lowest rating on this scale and indicates the weakest reaction-to-fire performance.

This is different from fire resistance, which relates to how long a complete wall, floor or roof build-up can resist fire.

Reaction to Fire:
Euroclass A1
