Our Expert Says:

15mm moisture resistant plasterboard is the board to reach for when a job in a humid room calls for more than the standard 12.5mm sheet: the extra thickness gives a more robust, rigid board with a little more acoustic mass, which is why it tends to be specified on commercial fit-outs and higher-spec builds. Like the 12.5mm board it has a water-repellent core for kitchens, bathrooms and utility rooms, and tapered edges that tape and fill flush for a paint-ready finish. Worth remembering the extra thickness adds robustness, not water resistance: it is moisture resistant, not waterproof, so showers and wet rooms still need a cement backer or a tanking membrane. A sound choice where a specification asks for 15mm, or where you simply want a sturdier board in a damp-prone room. Click for our full review

2.88m² per board

Product Description

15mm Moisture Resistant Plasterboard (Tapered Edge) is the thicker moisture-resistant board, a gypsum board with a water-repellent core for humid rooms where a job wants more substance than the standard 12.5mm sheet. It lines internal walls and ceilings in kitchens, bathrooms, en-suites and utility rooms, and is the thickness to reach for when a specification calls for 15mm or when a more robust, rigid board is wanted.

Each board measures 2400mm x 1200mm x 15mm and covers 2.88m², sold per board. It is a moisture-resistant board to BS EN 520, Type H1 (the grade with the lowest water absorption, 5% or less by weight), the same water-repellent formulation as the 12.5mm board carried in a heavier, stiffer sheet. That extra 2.5mm adds rigidity and a little acoustic mass, and it also adds weight, so a full sheet is a firm two-person lift, with a board lifter worth having for ceilings.

The extra thickness is what sets this board apart from the 12.5mm. The added core mass makes for a more rigid, robust wall or ceiling that feels solid and stands up better to knocks, and it lifts airborne sound performance a little along the way, which is why 15mm tends to be the one specified on commercial kitchens, washrooms and higher-spec jobs. The moisture resistance itself is the same as the thinner board: water-repellent additives run right through the gypsum core to resist the humidity and splashing that would swell and soften a standard sheet, keeping the board a stable base for tiling or a plaster finish.

15mm moisture resistant plasterboard goes onto timber and metal stud walls, partitions and ceilings in humidity-prone rooms, and is the board building control will expect to see on bathroom and kitchen walls under Approved Document C where 15mm is specified. Cut it by scoring and snapping or with a plasterboard saw, fix with drywall screws or bond by dot and dab, and install it in line with the manufacturer's guidance and your project specification. As with any moisture board, it is moisture resistant, not waterproof, and not for constant, direct water contact: inside a shower enclosure or wet room, use a cement-based tile backer board, or tank the moisture board with a waterproofing membrane before tiling. Chosen where the spec or the job calls for a thicker board, it keeps a damp-prone room sound and solid where a standard sheet would fail.

Key Benefits of 15mm Moisture Resistant Plasterboard:

  • 15mm moisture resistant gypsum plasterboard, the thicker board in the range, for internal walls and ceilings in kitchens, bathrooms, en-suites and utility rooms.
  • Water-repellent additives worked through the gypsum core to resist humidity and occasional splashing.
  • Manufactured to BS EN 520, Type H1 (5% or less water absorption by weight).
  • Extra thickness gives a more rigid, robust board with a little more acoustic mass than a 12.5mm sheet.
  • Often the thickness specified for commercial kitchens, washrooms and higher-spec builds.
  • Stable base for tiling with a suitable waterproof adhesive and grout, or for a taped-and-jointed or skimmed finish.
  • Tapered long edges tape and fill flush for a seamless, paint-ready surface.
  • Full 2400mm x 1200mm sheet covering 2.88m², sized to standard 400mm and 600mm stud and joist centres.
  • Non-combustible gypsum core, classified Euroclass A2-s1,d0 for reaction to fire.
  • Insulation UK own-brand board at competitive trade pricing, with bulk pricing available.

Good to know:

  • Thicker, not more waterproof. The extra 2.5mm adds rigidity, robustness and a little acoustic mass, not water resistance. It is moisture resistant, not waterproof, and showers and wet rooms still need a cement backer or a tanking membrane.
  • A firmer lift. 15mm is heavier than the 12.5mm board, so a full sheet is a two-person lift and a board lifter helps on ceilings.
  • 12.5mm is the domestic standard. For an ordinary kitchen or bathroom, 12.5mm usually does the job; reach for 15mm where a specification calls for it or you want a more robust board.
  • A base for tiling, with the right adhesive. It takes ceramic tiling well, but use a waterproof tile adhesive and grout so the finished surface, not just the board, resists water.
  • Keep it flat and dry. Store boards flat, off the ground and protected from damp before fixing, and do not fix boards that have got wet.

When a humid room needs a heavier, more rigid board than the standard 12.5mm, 15mm moisture resistant plasterboard is the step up: the same water-repellent core in a sturdier sheet, finished flush off the tape and ready to tile or paint.

Product FAQs

Is 15mm plasterboard moisture resistant?

Not automatically. 15mm is a thickness, while moisture resistance is a board type, so a plain 15mm board is not moisture resistant unless it is specifically a moisture-resistant (Type H) board. This one is: a 15mm moisture-resistant board (Type H1) with water-repellent additives for humid rooms. If moisture resistance matters, check the board is a moisture-resistant type, not just the right thickness; on site it is conventionally faced in green.
