Our Expert Says:

12.5mm fire resistant plasterboard in the tapered edge, full-sheet format is the one to reach for on larger fire-rated walls, partitions and ceilings, where you want fewer joints across the run and a flush, paint-ready finish without skimming the whole face. The glass-fibre reinforced gypsum core does the fire work, contributing up to 30 minutes of fire resistance as a single layer in a correctly specified system, while the recessed long edges tape and fill flush for a seamless surface. At 2400mm x 1200mm it lines walls and ceilings quickly and sits neatly to 400mm and 600mm stud and joist centres. A sound choice for stud partitions, domestic separating walls, steel encasement and any internal lining a specification calls to be fire-rated. Click for our full review

Product Description

12.5mm Fire Resistant Plasterboard (Tapered Edge) is a fire-rated gypsum board in the full 2400mm x 1200mm sheet size, for lining internal walls, partitions and ceilings that need to resist fire as well as take a finish. It pairs a fire-performing gypsum core with recessed long edges, so larger runs go up with fewer joints and finish flush by taping and filling rather than a full skim.

Each board measures 2400mm x 1200mm x 12.5mm and covers 2.88m², sold per board. The full-sheet format is the efficient choice for open wall and ceiling areas: more coverage per board means fewer joints to tape across the run, and the 2400mm x 1200mm size sits to standard 400mm and 600mm stud and joist centres. Fire board is denser and heavier than a standard board of the same size, so a full sheet is a two-person lift, and a board lifter is worth having for ceilings.

The tapered edge is the defining feature. The two long edges are recessed, so where boards meet they form a shallow channel that scrim tape and jointing compound fill flush, giving a continuous, paint-ready surface without skimming the whole face (though it takes a full skim just as readily if you would rather plaster it out). Behind the finish, the core is what earns the fire rating: aerated gypsum reinforced with glass fibre, which releases its chemically bound water slowly as vapour under fire and holds the calcined board together rather than breaking up.

Fire resistant plasterboard goes onto timber and metal stud partitions, wall linings and ceilings, and into domestic separating walls and steel encasement, wherever a fire-rated lining is specified. It cuts by scoring and snapping or with a plasterboard saw and fixes with drywall screws. Install it in line with the board manufacturer's guidance and the tested system in your project specification: fire resistance is a property of the complete construction (board, framing, fixings, insulation and jointing), not of a board on its own. As a guide, a single 12.5mm layer contributes up to 30 minutes of fire resistance in the correct system, with 60 minutes and beyond reached through additional layers or thicker board.

Key Benefits of 12.5mm Fire Resistant Plasterboard:

  • 12.5mm fire resistant gypsum plasterboard in the full 2400mm x 1200mm sheet, for internal walls, partitions and ceilings needing a fire-rated lining.
  • Tapered long edges tape and fill flush for a seamless, paint-ready finish without skimming the full face.
  • Aerated gypsum core reinforced with glass fibre to maintain integrity at high temperatures.
  • Contributes up to 30 minutes of fire resistance as a single layer within a correctly specified system.
  • Covers 2.88m² per board, so larger runs go up with fewer joints to tape.
  • Sized to standard 400mm and 600mm stud and joist centres.
  • Non-combustible gypsum core, classified Euroclass A2-s1,d0 for reaction to fire.
  • Cuts by scoring and snapping or with a plasterboard saw, and fixes with drywall screws to timber or metal stud.
  • Takes a full plaster skim as readily as a taped-and-jointed finish.
  • Insulation UK own-brand board at competitive trade pricing, with bulk pricing available.

Good to know:

  • Fire resistance is a system property. The up-to-30-minutes figure is for a single layer in a correctly specified and tested system, not the board alone. For 60, 90 or 120 minutes, follow the manufacturer's tested system.
  • Tapered edge, not square. The recessed long edges are made for taping and jointing to a flush finish; ends and cut edges butt square and are jointed like any square joint.
  • A two-person lift. The reinforced core makes fire board heavier than standard board, and a full 2400mm x 1200mm sheet is a two-person lift; a board lifter helps on ceilings.
  • Not a moisture board. For bathrooms, wet rooms or damp, unheated spaces use a moisture-resistant board, and combine board types where both fire and moisture resistance are needed.
  • Keep it flat and dry. Store boards flat, off the ground and protected from damp, and do not fix boards that have got wet.

For lining larger fire-rated walls and ceilings, the tapered edge full sheet is the efficient board: maximum coverage, fewer joints and a flush finish straight off the tape.

Certifications & Standards

  • Reaction to fire: Euroclass A2-s1,d0 to BS EN 13501-1.
  • Non-combustible gypsum core reinforced with glass fibre.
