Frequently Asked Questions About PIR Insulation

What is PIR insulation? PIR (polyisocyanurate) insulation is a type of thermal insulation material used in building and construction. It is known for its excellent thermal performance and high resistance to heat flow, making it an effective solution for reducing energy costs in homes and buildings.

Why is PIR Insulation so expensive? The cost of PIR insulation reflects its superior thermal performance and energy efficiency. The materials and technology used to manufacture PIR insulation are advanced, contributing to its higher price point compared to other insulation types.

Can PIR Insulation get wet? PIR insulation is generally moisture-resistant but not entirely waterproof. While it can withstand some exposure to moisture without losing its insulative properties, prolonged or excessive wetness can affect its performance. It's important to protect PIR insulation from water during installation and use.

Can PIR Insulation be recycled? Recycling PIR insulation can be challenging due to its chemical properties and the presence of fire retardants. However, efforts are being made to improve the recyclability of PIR products as part of the industry's commitment to sustainability.

How much PIR Insulation do I need? The amount of PIR insulation required depends on the specific energy efficiency goals, climate, and the area being insulated. It's best to consult with a professional to calculate the optimal thickness and quantity based on your particular needs.

How is PIR insulation made? PIR insulation is manufactured through a chemical reaction between a polyol and an isocyanate, forming a rigid foam board. This process involves the use of catalysts and blowing agents, which expand the material into a highly insulative foam with a closed-cell structure.

How does PIR Insulation work? PIR insulation works by trapping air within its closed-cell foam structure, significantly reducing heat transfer. This air barrier effectively minimizes the amount of heat that can pass through, helping to maintain a consistent indoor temperature and reduce energy consumption.

What is PIR Insulation made of? PIR insulation is made from polyisocyanurate, a type of plastic known for its excellent fire resistance and thermal properties. It typically features a foil facing to enhance its thermal resistance and moisture barrier.

How to cut PIR Insulation? PIR insulation can be cut using a sharp knife or a fine-toothed saw to fit specific measurements.

For precision cuts and to minimize onsite waste and mess, InsulationUK offers a bespoke cutting service. Customers can order PIR boards pre-cut to their exact specifications, ensuring a perfect fit and easier installation.

Key Considerations

When using Celotex insulation boards you need to satisfy yourself that the use of the product meets all relevant national Building Regulations and guidance as well as local, national, and other applicable standards relevant for your construction or application, including requirements concerning fire and applicable height restrictions.

Important Notice: Please be aware that during periods of high demand, we reserve the right to provide alternative brands that meet the same specifications and quality standards as the products you originally ordered.

Customer Product Questions

Why does Celotex start with TB GA & XR? What do they mean?

Celotex comes in a range of thicknesses from 20mm to 200mm. These are the same boards made from PIR and foil backed. Celotex have put them into ranges to help you decide what thickness may be more suitable for your application, however you may have been given a specific U value you need to meet or been advised. If you are unsure, please contact our technical team sales@insulationuk.co.uk

TB4000

TB stands for thermal bridging, which is areas prone to cold spots & heat loss. Thickness ranges from 20mm to 40mm, ideal for tight spaces or for a multi layer build up.

GA4000

Is for general applications - ranging from 50mm to 100mm in thickness, these boards are more commonly used in walls, but are suitable for floors and pitched roofs. GA4100 100mm PIR insulation is perhaps the best selling thickness in this range.

XR4000

Stands for extra resistance, ranging from 110mm to 150mm this insulation is idea for when space isn't a restriction and where a superior thermal efficiency is required.

What do the numbers mean in Celotex PIR insulation for example TB4020 or GA4100 or XR4200

The 4000 is the range name given to Celotex PIR - so to differentiate between the thicknesses the coding starts with 4 to tell you the Celotex range then the thickness of the insulation is the preceding number.

4020 - 4000 range 20mm thickness

4075 - 4000 range 75mm thickness

4150 - 4000 range 150mm thickness

What is an R value?

An R value is the thermal resistance that the insulation has. PIR insulation has a high thermal resistance ensuring reduction in heat transfer

How do you fix PIR insulation to a solid wall?

Solid walls are normally made of brick or masonry where there is not fittings to the wall. The PIR is normally fixed with an adhesive, mechanical fixings can be used as a further way of securing the boards. Make sure the wall is clear of debris, like old plaster, wall paper etc before affixing the PIR boards.

How do you install PIR boards on a timber frame wall?

A timber frame wall is normally wooden battens fixed to a solid wall to ensure stability. The PIR can be cut and fitted tightly between the battens. The insulation can be fixed over the timber joists, using a mechanical fix.

How do I know what thickness of PIR insulation I need?

The thickness of your insulation board will be dependent on a few factors. Is your insulation for walls, floors or a pitched roof, how much space is there and what u value do you need to achieve. If you haven't been advised by your builder or building control, then we can help. Just call the team on 03003 034 578 or email us at sales@insulationuk.co.uk

Hi do I calculate a U value?

U-values are determined for various building elements, including walls, floors, roofs, windows, and door and calculating U values can be daunting. There are several factors to include, especially where the insulation will be installed. There are calculators available, but our technical team can help call us on 03003 034 578.

It says the that PIR insulation is suitable for walls, can I use this as a cavity wall?

The standard PIR boards can be used for cavity wall insulation, but you will need to cut them to size, ensure you have cavity batts to ensure a 50mm air gap. We recommend using either Eurowall+ full fill cavity boards or Eurowall partial fill cavity insulation board

Can you paint straight onto PIR boards?

No, if you are using PIR as a wall insulation, we recommend using plasterboard

and a plaster like British Gypsum Thistle Multi Finish Plaster 25kg

once the wall is plastered then you can decorate.

Is cutting PIR insulation messy?

If you need to cut your PIR to fit a particular size, then be aware it can be a messy job. Make sure any floor is covered you can use floor protection

If the PIR board has a foil facing do I need DPM?

When using PIR insulation as a floor insulation, you will need a DPM, you can shop DPM rolls here

Does the PIR board have writing on?

Yes, the PIR board normally has the manufacturers name written on it.

I need to cut my PIR does it have any lines to ensure a straight cut?

Yes the PIR board has grid lines to enable you to cut it correctly.

Are PIR boards foil faced?

Yes PIR insulation boards are foil faced on both sides

What is the thermal conductivity of PIR?

PIR has a low thermal conductivity (0.022 W/mK) to optimize energy savings.

What is PIR?

PIR stands for polyisocyanurate and is a rigid foam board insulation. It is a closed cell foam structure
