Our Expert Says

50mm is the thickness most floor specifications reach for first in the Kingspan Kooltherm® K103 range, giving a thermal resistance of 2.60 m²K/W from a board that keeps the screed or slab build-up in check. Its rigid thermoset phenolic core runs at a 0.019 W/mK thermal conductivity and holds 120 kPa under compression, so it copes with screed and everyday floor loads once the floor is finished. It goes into beam and block, suspended timber and solid concrete floors, laid over a damp proof membrane and ready to run with underfloor heating. Bought as single sheets, the 50mm is ordered board by board, which suits smaller floors, repairs and topping a job up to the right count. Click for our full review

Product Description

50mm Kingspan Kooltherm K103 Floorboard is among the most widely specified thicknesses in the K103 floor range, supplied here as single sheets measuring 2.4m x 1.2m. It is the thickness many floor build-ups default to: enough phenolic insulation to make a real difference to a ground floor, without the depth that the higher thicknesses add to screed and slab levels.

At 50mm the board reaches a thermal resistance of 2.60 m²K/W, working from a thermal conductivity of 0.019 W/mK that is among the lowest in rigid floor insulation. Each sheet measures 2400mm x 1200mm, covers 2.88m², and is faced on both sides with a glass tissue based facing autohesively bonded to the core. A compressive strength of 120 kPa means it sits under a screed or slab and carries normal floor loads once the floor is complete.

Because phenolic delivers that resistance at a lower lambda than most floor insulants, the 50mm board reaches 2.60 m²K/W in less depth than a higher-conductivity material would need for the same figure. On floors where finished levels are fixed by thresholds, doorways or existing surfaces, that matters: the insulation performs without lifting the floor more than the construction can take.

The board is used in beam and dense block ground floors, suspended timber ground floors and solid concrete ground floors, positioned below a screed, beneath a slab or between joists to suit the floor type. It is always laid over a damp proof membrane and fitted to Kingspan's guidance and the project specification, and it is not placed directly over timber joists. Across domestic, commercial and industrial work, in new build or refurbishment, it pairs with underfloor heating systems.

Key Benefits of Kingspan Kooltherm K103:

  • One of the most widely specified thicknesses in the K103 floor range.
  • Thermal resistance (R-value) of 2.60 m²K/W at 50mm.
  • Rigid thermoset phenolic core at 0.019 W/mK, among the lowest conductivity in floor insulation.
  • Reaches its R-value in less depth than higher-lambda boards, helping to hold finished floor levels.
  • 120 kPa compressive strength for screed and normal floor loads.
  • Glass tissue facing on both sides, autohesively bonded to the core.
  • Single sheets at 2.4m x 1.2m, 2.88m² each, ordered to the exact board count.
  • Fits beam and block, suspended timber and solid concrete floors, below slab or screed.
  • Compatible with underfloor heating, for new build and refurbishment alike.

Good to know:

  • A damp proof membrane (minimum 1200 gauge polythene) goes beneath the boards, which must not touch subsoil directly.
  • Though it resists water vapour, the board is not a vapour control layer; below a screed, lay a separate lapped and taped polythene sheet over it as the VCL.
  • Boards are not fixed straight onto timber joists; in a suspended floor they drop between the joists onto battens, saddle clips or nails.
  • The 2.60 m²K/W figure is for the board; the floor's U-value depends on the whole build-up, so run the calculation before ordering.

Covering a full floor? The 50mm is also sold by the pack: view the K103 pack.

As the floor thickness most jobs start with, 50mm Kooltherm K103 in single sheets lets you buy exactly the count the floor takes, no surplus.

Thermal Performance

Thermal performance helps show how effectively the product reduces heat transfer.

Thermal conductivity measures how readily heat passes through the material, so lower figures generally indicate better insulating performance.

R Value shows the material’s thermal resistance at that thickness, so higher figures generally mean stronger insulation performance.

These figures relate to the insulation product itself and should be considered alongside the full wall, roof or floor build-up when checking project requirements.

Thermal Conductivity:
0.019 W/mK
R Value:
2.60 M²K/W
Physical Properties

Compressive strength shows how well a product resists being squashed under pressure.

The figure is measured in kPa, which stands for kilopascals.

A higher kPa number means stronger resistance to compression. For example, 120 kPa offers more compression resistance than 70 kPa, but less than 150 kPa, 200 kPa or 300 kPa.

This does not mean the product can carry that load on its own. It should always be checked as part of the full floor, wall, roof or system build-up.

Compressive Strength:
120 kPa
Fire Performance

Euroclass reaction to fire is the European EN 13501-1 classification used to show how a construction product behaves when exposed to fire.

The main scale runs from A1 and A2 at the highest end, through B, C, D and E, down to F.

A1 is non-combustible and A2 is limited combustibility, while lower classes indicate a greater contribution to fire.

Euroclass F is the lowest rating on this scale and indicates the weakest reaction-to-fire performance.

This is different from fire resistance, which relates to how long a complete wall, floor or roof build-up can resist fire.

Reaction to Fire:
Euroclass C-s2,d0
