Our Expert Says

Most domestic joists in this country are set at 600mm centres, and this is the Acustop board that suits them. Drop below 32mm and you are into 400mm centre territory, so for a lot of joist work the 32mm is not the upgrade, it is simply the right board. It also holds the best numbers in the range: 21 dB on its own and 26 dB over 5mm decoupling strips, the highest Tekfon publish for any Acustop deck. Fit it with joist strips and the acoustic perimeter strip, pair it with the Acustop ceiling treatment below, and you have the strongest floor build-up the range offers. Click for our full review

Product Description

Joist spacing usually decides which acoustic deck a project needs, and 32mm Acustop Acoustic Floor Deck is the board Tekfon specify for joists built at 600mm centres. Fitted over self-adhesive acoustic joist strips it becomes the structural deck itself, and it works equally well laid as an overlay across an existing timber floor, a concrete or screed subfloor, or a battened acoustic cradle system. For a large share of domestic joist work this is the default rather than a step up, because the thinner 28mm board is restricted to a maximum of 400mm centres.

The board is a P5 moisture resistant tongue and groove chipboard, PEFC and FSC certified with a heat-treated green top surface, bonded to a 10mm mat of 100% twice recycled PET. That gives 22mm of chipboard above the resilient layer, and each board covers 1.44m² at 2400mm x 600mm.

Four build-ups are covered by the same board. It can sit on an existing timber floor, on a concrete or screed subfloor, direct onto timber joists over isolation strips, or on timber battens over an acoustic cradle system where a raised floor is needed to run services. That range of options is why the 32mm deck suits both refurbishment work, where the existing structure dictates the approach, and new build, where the floor can be designed around it.

Whichever build-up is used, the isolation matters as much as the board. Tekfon's own testing shows a meaningful gain when the deck sits on 5mm decoupling strips rather than hard on the structure, which is why the joist strips and the perimeter strip are specified components rather than accessories. Published figures for the board are laboratory results showing what it adds over an existing floor that already reduces some impact noise. They are not whole-floor results, and they do not on their own demonstrate compliance with Approved Document E, which is verified across the whole construction by pre-completion testing or Robust Details.

The full Tekfon system is what carries performance, and the ceiling below counts as much as the deck above: two layers of 15mm acoustic plasterboard on resilient bars at 400mm centres, plus a 100mm 60kg/m³ slab between the joists or in the ceiling void, with all edges sealed using acoustic sealant.

Installation follows the same discipline as the rest of the range. Boards run in a half bond pattern away from the doorway, and where they sit direct on joists they are laid at 90° to the joist run with the self-adhesive strip running the full length of each joist so no board touches timber. Tongues are cut from any board meeting a wall. Joints are glued top and bottom with the Tekfon Water Resistant 2 in 1 Adhesive, mechanical fixings are avoided except where two cut edges meet at a doorway, and no board is left with an unsupported end. Give it 24 hours before skirtings and finishes go on.

Finishes are wide open: carpet with underlay, LVT and vinyl go down directly, and a tiled finish is possible when used with a decoupling mat, which makes the 32mm deck workable in kitchens, bathrooms and utility rooms as well as living space.

Key Benefits of 32mm Acustop Acoustic Floor Deck:

  • The Acustop board specified for 600mm joist centres, fitted with self-adhesive acoustic joist strips.
  • Highest tested figures in the Acustop floor range: ΔLw = 21 dB for the board alone, and 26 dB over 5mm decoupling isolation strips at 600mm centres.
  • Tested to BS EN ISO 10140-3:2021 and rated to BS EN ISO 717-2:2020 at the University of Salford.
  • 22mm of P5 moisture resistant chipboard over a 10mm resilient PET mat, in a 32mm total build-up.
  • Works as a structural deck on joists or cradles, and as an overlay on timber, concrete and screed.
  • PEFC and FSC certified chipboard with a heat-treated green surface that stands up to site traffic.
  • Resilient mat made from 100% twice recycled PET, using 14 bottles per board.
  • 2400mm x 600mm boards covering 1.44m², so fewer joints across a large floor.
  • Takes carpet with underlay, LVT and vinyl, and can be tiled over with a decoupling mat.
  • PET mat is considered hypoallergenic and the board is extremely low in VOCs.

32mm Acustop Acoustic Floor Deck good to know:

  • This is the board for 600mm joist centres. The 28mm Acustop board is limited to 400mm centres direct to joists, so check joist spacing before ordering either.
  • Self-adhesive acoustic joist strips are required for any direct to joist installation, running the full length of each joist so the board never touches timber.
  • Boards fixed direct to joists run at 90° to the joists, and no board is installed with unsupported ends. It remains the customer's responsibility to confirm the joists or subfloor can carry the load.
  • The tested performance applies to the complete Tekfon system, including the acoustic ceiling treatment below the joists or subfloor.
  • The published ΔLw figures are product-level results, not whole-floor ones, and do not on their own demonstrate compliance with Approved Document E.
  • The acoustic perimeter strip is a required component, isolating the deck from the surrounding structure and skirtings.
  • Boards measure 2400mm x 600mm and are sold individually, each covering 1.44m².
  • Tongue and groove joints are glued top and bottom with the Tekfon Water Resistant 2 in 1 Adhesive.
  • Leave the floor untrafficked for at least 24 hours before skirtings and floor finishes.
  • Tiling over this deck is possible, but only in conjunction with a decoupling mat.
  • Kitchen and bathroom units sit on a separate plywood or OSB platform on isolating pads, never fixed through the board.
  • Pipe and service penetrations pass through an oversized hole sealed with Tekfon Acoustic and Intumescent Mastic.
  • P5 chipboard is moisture resistant but not waterproof: store flat, off the ground and dry.

For separating floors on standard joist spacing, the 32mm deck is the top of the Acustop range and the one that fits without compromise, backed by the highest published figures Tekfon hold for the system.

Certifications & Standards

  • Rated in accordance with BS EN ISO 717-2:2020, board alone: ΔLw = 21 dB, CI,Δ = −10 dB, CI,r = −1 dB

  • Testing carried out at the University of Salford
  • Evaluation based on laboratory measurements in one-third-octave bands by an engineering method, giving indicative figures
  • Chipboard to P5 grade, PEFC and FSC certified
  • Resilient layer manufactured from 100% twice recycled PET
  • Designed to contribute towards the airborne and impact sound performance standards set out in Approved Document E of the Building Regulations, when installed as a complete Tekfon system including the specified acoustic ceiling treatment

Always refer to the latest Tekfon technical datasheet and installation guidance, and confirm the full floor and ceiling build-up against the project acoustic strategy, before specification or installation.

Acoustic Performance

Acoustic performance helps show how effectively a product or build-up can reduce sound transfer.

Impact performance relates to contact noise, such as footsteps or dropped objects. Where shown as Ln,w, lower dB figures generally mean better impact sound performance.

Airborne performance relates to sound travelling through the air, such as voices, music or traffic. Where shown as Rw, higher dB figures generally mean better sound reduction.

These figures should be checked against the product datasheet and considered as part of the full floor or ceiling build-up.

Impact Performance:
62 dB
Airborne Performance:
45 dB
