Product Description
Product Description
28mm Acustop Acoustic Floor Deck is a P5 moisture resistant tongue and groove chipboard bonded to a 100% twice recycled 10mm PET resilient mat, supplied as a 2400mm x 600mm board covering 1.44m². Unlike a slimline overlay, it can work either as an overlay across an existing timber, concrete or screed subfloor, or as the structural deck itself fixed direct to timber joists over acoustic joist isolation strips.
That direct to joist application carries a firm limit. The 28mm board can only be fitted at a maximum of 400mm joist centres with joist strips. Where joists are built at 600mm centres, the 32mm board is required instead. Boards laid direct to joists run at 90° to the joists, no board is installed with unsupported ends, and it remains the customer's responsibility to confirm the joists or subfloor can carry the load, with noggins or additional bracing fitted where needed.
Under laboratory test to BS EN ISO 10140-3:2021 and rated to BS EN ISO 717-2:2020, the board returned a weighted reduction of impact sound pressure level of ΔLw = 20 dB, with spectrum adaptation terms of CI,Δ −11 dB and CI,r 0 dB. Tested again over 5mm Acustop decoupling isolation strips at 600mm centres, the same board returned ΔLw = 25 dB, with CI,Δ −9 dB and CI,r −2 dB. Testing was carried out at the University of Salford.
That five decibel difference is the most useful thing on the datasheet. It shows how much of the result comes from decoupling rather than from the board, and it is the reason the isolation strips and perimeter strip are specified components rather than accessories. Both figures are product-level laboratory results showing the improvement the board adds over an existing floor structure that already reduces some impact noise. Neither is a whole-floor result, and neither on its own demonstrates compliance with Approved Document E, which is a whole-construction requirement verified by pre-completion testing or Robust Details.
Reaching those standards depends on the complete Tekfon system, and the ceiling below matters as much as the deck above. The specified treatment is two layers of 15mm acoustic plasterboard fitted to resilient bars at 400mm centres, plus a 100mm 60kg/m³ slab between the joists or in the ceiling void, with all edges sealed using acoustic sealant.
The chipboard is P5 grade to resist moisture, PEFC and FSC certified, and carries a heat-treated green top surface that stands up to site traffic before the finish goes down. Boards are laid in a half bond pattern, starting as far from the doorway as possible, with tongues cut from any board abutting a wall. Tongue and groove joints are glued top and bottom with the Tekfon Water Resistant 2 in 1 Adhesive. Mechanical fixings are not used except where two cut edges meet at a doorway, and the floor is left untrafficked for at least 24 hours before skirtings and finishes.
On finishes, the deck takes carpet with underlay, LVT and vinyl directly, and unlike the slimline MDF board it can also be tiled over when used with a decoupling mat, which opens it up to kitchens, bathrooms and utility areas where a tiled finish is expected.
Key Benefits of 28mm Acustop Acoustic Floor Deck:
- Works as a structural deck direct to joists at up to 400mm centres, or as an overlay on timber, concrete and screed subfloors.
- Laboratory tested reduction of impact sound pressure level of ΔLw = 20 dB, rising to 25 dB over 5mm Acustop decoupling isolation strips at 600mm centres.
- Tested to BS EN ISO 10140-3:2021, rated to BS EN ISO 717-2:2020 at the University of Salford.
- 2400mm x 600mm board covering 1.44m², so fewer boards and fewer joints across a large floor.
- P5 moisture resistant chipboard with a heat-treated green surface that takes site traffic.
- PEFC and FSC certified chipboard, bonded to a mat made from 100% twice recycled PET using 14 bottles per board.
- Tongue and groove edges glued top and bottom for a continuous, tightly jointed deck.
- Can be tiled over when used with a decoupling mat, as well as taking carpet with underlay, LVT and vinyl.
- PET mat is considered hypoallergenic and the board is extremely low in VOCs.
- Suits four build-ups: acoustic cradles, concrete or screed subfloor, timber subfloor and direct to timber joists.
28mm Acustop Acoustic Floor Deck good to know:
- Direct to joists, the 28mm board is limited to 400mm joist centres with joist strips. At 600mm centres the 32mm board must be used instead. Getting this wrong is the most common specification error on this range.
- Boards fixed direct to joists are laid at 90° to the run of the joists, and no board is installed with unsupported ends.
- The tested performance applies to the complete Tekfon system. All specified components must be used, and the acoustic ceiling treatment below is integral to how the floor performs.
- The published ΔLw figures are product-level results, not whole-floor ones, and do not on their own demonstrate compliance with Approved Document E.
- The acoustic perimeter strip is a required component, isolating the deck from the surrounding structure and skirtings.
- Boards measure 2400mm x 600mm and are sold individually, each covering 1.44m².
- Tongue and groove joints are glued top and bottom with the Tekfon Water Resistant 2 in 1 Adhesive. Mechanical fixings are not used except where two cut edges meet at a doorway.
- Leave the floor untrafficked for at least 24 hours after laying, before skirtings and floor finishes go down.
- A tiled finish is possible over this deck, but only in conjunction with a decoupling mat.
- In bathrooms and kitchens, units are mounted on a separate plywood or OSB platform on isolating pads rather than fixed straight through the board.
- Pipe and service penetrations pass through an oversized hole sealed with Tekfon Acoustic and Intumescent Mastic.
- P5 chipboard is moisture resistant but not waterproof: store boards flat, off the ground and dry before installation.
For separating floors in conversions, new build and refurbishment alike, the 28mm deck covers more ground per board than a slimline overlay and can carry the floor itself where joist centres allow, with two published test figures showing exactly what the board does and what the decoupling adds.

Acoustic performance helps show how effectively a product or build-up can reduce sound transfer.
Impact performance relates to contact noise, such as footsteps or dropped objects. Where shown as Ln,w, lower dB figures generally mean better impact sound performance.
Airborne performance relates to sound travelling through the air, such as voices, music or traffic. Where shown as Rw, higher dB figures generally mean better sound reduction.
These figures should be checked against the product datasheet and considered as part of the full floor or ceiling build-up.
- Impact Performance:
- 62 dB
- Airborne Performance:
- 45 dB
