Product Description
Product Description
12.5mm Fire Rated Plasterboard (6x3) is a gypsum board built for fire performance, made with an aerated gypsum core reinforced with glass fibre and additional additives that hold the board together at high temperatures. It lines internal walls, partitions and ceilings where Building Regulations, a project specification or a warranty provider call for a fire-rated board in place of standard wallboard.
Each sheet measures 1800mm x 900mm x 12.5mm and covers 1.62m², sold per board. The 6x3 is the smaller, more manageable format in the range: lighter to handle than a full 2400mm x 1200mm sheet and easier to work in lofts, cupboards, stairwells and other tight or awkward spaces. Fire board is denser and heavier than a standard board of the same size, so plan your handling around that, but the 6x3 keeps the weight sensible for one or two people to move.
The performance comes from the core. Under fire, the water chemically bound into the gypsum is released slowly as vapour, drawing off heat and slowing the passage of fire, while the glass-fibre reinforcement stops the calcined core from breaking up. The square edge is the other defining feature: the long edges butt together flat with no recess, giving a continuous, level surface across the wall or ceiling that takes a full plaster skim or direct decoration once the joints are filled.
Fire rated plasterboard goes onto stud partitions, wall linings and ceilings, and into steel encasement and garage-to-house separating walls, wherever a fire-rated lining is specified. Common uses run from loft conversions and HMO room separation to protected escape routes and compartment walls. Install it in line with the board manufacturer's guidance and the tested system set out in your project specification: fire resistance is a property of the complete construction (board, framing, fixings, insulation and jointing), not of a sheet on its own, so it is the system as a whole that delivers the rated performance. As a guide, a single 12.5mm layer contributes up to 30 minutes of fire resistance in the correct system, with higher ratings reached through additional layers or thicker board.
Key Benefits of 12.5mm Fire Rated Plasterboard:
- 12.5mm fire rated gypsum plasterboard for internal walls, partitions and ceilings that need a fire-resistant lining.
- Aerated gypsum core reinforced with glass fibre and additives to maintain integrity at high temperatures.
- Contributes up to 30 minutes of fire resistance as a single layer within a correctly specified system.
- Square edge butts flat for a continuous surface, ready for a full plaster skim or direct decoration.
- 6x3 (1800mm x 900mm) format is easier to lift and manoeuvre than a full 2400mm x 1200mm sheet.
- Covers 1.62m² per board, supplied as single sheets.
- Non-combustible gypsum core, classified Euroclass A2-s1,d0 for reaction to fire.
- Cuts by scoring and snapping, and fixes with drywall screws to timber or metal stud, or dot and dab onto masonry.
- Suits fire-rated partitions, ceilings, steel encasement and garage separating walls when installed to the tested system.
- Insulation UK own-brand board at competitive trade pricing, with bulk pricing available.
Good to know:
- Fire resistance is a system property. The up-to-30-minutes figure applies to a single layer in a correctly specified and tested system, not to the board on its own. For a specific rating (60, 90 or 120 minutes), follow the manufacturer's tested system, usually with additional layers or thicker board.
- Square edge, not tapered. The flat butt edge suits a full skim or direct decoration. For a flush taped-and-jointed finish without skimming, a tapered edge board is the better call.
- Heavier than standard board. The reinforced core makes fire board denser, so it is a firmer lift; the 6x3 size keeps that manageable, though ceilings may still want a board lifter.
- Not a moisture board. For bathrooms, wet rooms or damp, unheated spaces, use a moisture-resistant board, and combine board types where both fire and moisture resistance are required.
- Keep it flat and dry. Store boards flat, off the ground and protected from damp before fixing.
When a wall or ceiling has to hold back fire as well as take a finish, 12.5mm fire rated plasterboard in the 6x3 size is the manageable option: a glass-fibre reinforced core that performs in a fire, in a sheet one or two people can move. For higher ratings, larger sheets or the tapered edge version, see the full fire rated plasterboard range, and for acoustic or moisture-resistant linings see our specialist plasterboard.
