What Is Loft Roll Insulation?
Known as loft insulation rolls, loft rolls or just insulation rolls, this product is supplied in long flexible rolls designed to be laid between and over ceiling joists to prevent heat loss.
Loft Insulation Roll Types
Mineral Wool & Glass Wool Loft Rolls
The most widely used loft insulation roll type in the UK. Glass mineral wool is non-combustible (Euroclass A1) and delivers excellent thermal performance at an affordable price. Our range includes:
-
Knauf Loft Roll 44 - the UK's leading glass mineral wool loft roll. Manufactured in the UK with ECOSE Technology, combi-cut for 400mm or 600mm joist spacings, available from 50mm to 200mm. 0.044 W/mK thermal conductivity.
-
Superglass Multi Roll 44- the same 0.044 W/mK thermal performance as Knauf at a lower price point. Multi-cut design fits standard and non-standard joist spacings. Available in 100mm, 150mm, 170mm and 200mm thicknesses.
Eco & Natural Fibre Loft Insulation Rolls
Choose a more sustainable insulation option without compromising performance. Our Thermafleece range offers itch-free, natural fibre alternatives to mineral wool, best for eco-conscious projects and loft conversions where comfortable handling matters.
-
Thermafleece CosyWool- 75% British sheep's wool blended with recycled polyester. Naturally regulates humidity, absorbs moisture without losing thermal performance (0.039 W/mK), and is itch-free with no PPE required. Available in 50mm–150mm in 370mm and 570mm widths.
-
Thermafleece SupaSoft- made from 100% recycled plastic bottles. Anti-bacterial, anti-mite and hypoallergenic. 0.040 W/mK thermal conductivity with good acoustic performance. Available in 50mm and 100mm.

Which Loft Insulation Roll Thickness Do I Need?
The recommended total loft insulation depth in the UK is 270mm for mineral wool insulation. Most homes with some existing insulation typically have between 100mm and 120mm in place, meaning a 150-170mm top-up loft roll will give you the full recommended depth. If you don't have any loft insulation already in place, the standard approach is to use two layers, a layer of 100mm followed by a layer of 170mm.
| Total depth target | Existing insulation | Top-up roll needed |
|---|---|---|
| 270mm | 100mm–120mm | 150mm–170mm loft roll |
| 270mm | 0mm (none) | 100mm + 170mm (two layers) |
| 270mm | 170mm | 100mm loft roll |
| Custom depth | Varies | Contact us for advice |
If your existing insulation is between these depths, subtract your current depth from 270mm to calculate the top-up thickness you need, then select the next size up if it falls between the example figures- e.g. select 170mm if you already have 115mm in place. Our team can advise if you're unsure.
270mm of mineral wool loft roll is the standard depth used to achieve the 0.16 W/m²K U-value target for roof construction set out under Part L of Building Regulation compliance in new builds.
Once you've calculated how many rolls you need, scroll up to filter by brand or thickness and add to basket.
How Much Loft Insulation Do I Need?
To calculate how many loft insulation rolls you need, first measure the total loft area in square metres (length × width), check the coverage per roll for your chosen thickness and then divide the total area by coverage per roll.
For example:
A 40m² loft using 170mm loft rolls (8m² coverage) would require approximately 5 rolls per layer.
For full 270mm insulation, remember you may need two layers of loft roll insulation, depending on your starting point as outlined above.
If you're unsure about your measurements or how many rolls to order, always check with your installer first or give us a call before you order and we'll help you work it out.
