12.5mm square edge plasterboard is the volume board for walls and ceilings headed for a full plaster skim, and buying it in bulk brings the cost per sheet down across a larger job. Straight-edged on all sides, the boards butt neatly together and are ready for a skim coat once fixed, whether screwed to timber or metal studwork or bonded to masonry by dot and dab. Each 2400mm x 1200mm sheet lines out 2.88m² of standard internal wall, partition or ceiling over a non-combustible gypsum core.

Product Description

Where a wall or ceiling is going to be skimmed from end to end, 12.5mm square edge plasterboard is the board to buy, and buying it in bulk keeps the material bill down on jobs that eat a lot of sheets. This is standard 12.5mm wallboard, the everyday thickness for internal walls, partitions and ceilings in UK construction, supplied here with straight square edges rather than the recessed edge used for tape and joint. The square profile means boards butt together and the joints are bridged by the plaster skim rather than by scrim tape and filler, which makes it the natural pick for a fully plastered finish or for backing and over-boarding.

Every sheet measures 2400mm x 1200mm and lines out 2.88m², a full-size board that falls neatly on 400mm and 600mm stud and joist centres and closes off large areas fast. At its core is non-combustible gypsum, faced in ivory paper, giving inherent fire resistance and a surface that is ready to skim or decorate once prepared. Fixing is straightforward: screw it back to timber or metal stud frames, or bond it straight to masonry, blockwork or brick with dot and dab adhesive.

The square edge is the one real difference between this board and its tapered counterpart. With no recess along the long edges, two boards meet in a flush butt joint that has nowhere to seat scrim tape and jointing compound below the board face, so a taped, drywall-style joint taken straight to paint is not what this board is for. Its home is the plastered finish, where a skim coat runs across the whole surface and hides the joints in one pass, along with base-layer and over-boarding work where a seamless taped joint does not matter. If the plan is to tape, fill and paint without skimming, reach for the tapered edge board instead.

Square edge 12.5mm board covers the bulk of standard wall and ceiling work in new build and refurbishment, and like any plasterboard it should go up in line with the manufacturer's fixing guidance and the project specification. Because it is most often specified where whole rooms or whole plots are being skimmed, it lends itself to volume ordering: buy the sheets you need for the full run in one bulk order and the cost per board falls, which tells on a big skim-and-plaster job or a repeat-spec new build.

Where to use 12.5mm square edge plasterboard:

  • Walls and ceilings for skimming: full-surface plaster finish over butt-jointed boards.
  • Stud partitions: screw-fixed to timber or metal frames in new build and refit.
  • Dry lining to masonry: bonded to brick, block or masonry by dot and dab.
  • Base and over-boarding layers: backing coats and doubling up where a taped finish is not needed.

Key Benefits of 12.5mm Square Edge Plasterboard:

  • Standard 12.5mm gypsum wallboard for internal walls, partitions and ceilings.
  • Straight square edges that butt together, suited to a full plaster skim rather than tape and joint.
  • Non-combustible gypsum core for inherent fire resistance.
  • Ivory paper face that takes a plaster skim, paint or textured finish once prepared.
  • Full 2400mm x 1200mm sheet covering 2.88m², falling on 400mm and 600mm centres.
  • Fixes by screw to timber or metal studwork, or by dot and dab to masonry, blockwork or brick.
  • At home in skim finishes, dry lining, base layers and over-boarding.
  • Works in single or multi-layer build-ups across new build and refurbishment.
  • Insulation UK own-brand board, cheaper per sheet the more you buy in bulk.

Good to know:

  • Square, not recessed. Straight long edges butt together with no taper for tape and filler, so plan on a full skim to bury the joints.
  • Choose by finish. Square edge for a plastered surface or backing layer; tapered edge if you want a taped, paint-ready joint without skimming.
  • Not moisture resistant. In bathrooms, wet rooms or damp, unheated spaces, specify a moisture-resistant board.
  • Not a fire-rated board. Where a set fire performance is required, use a fire-resistant board in a tested system.
  • Keep it flat and dry. Store boards flat and off the ground, protected from damp, and lift in pairs.

For rooms and ceilings bound for a plaster skim, 12.5mm square edge plasterboard is the workhorse to order in quantity: a straightforward, non-combustible-cored board that fixes fast and costs less per sheet the more you take.

Certifications & Standards

  • Reaction to fire: Euroclass A2-s1,d0 to BS EN 13501-1.
  • Non-combustible gypsum core.

Product FAQs

How do I plasterboard a ceiling?

Make sure the plasterboard is perpendicular to the joists. When installing multiple boards stagger the seams, so they don't all line up on the same stud, this keeps the installation strong and stable. Install horizontally and screw into the centre of the joist.

Can I decorate straight onto plasterboard?

Yes you can, most people do skim the walls before decoration. Just make sure the the joints are taped and filled and sanded, you may also want to use lining paper.

Textured paint may hide any imperfections.

Should the paper face on plasterboard face outwards or towards the wall?

The paper face should face outwards as it is designed to key with the plaster

What does TE & SE stand for when choosing plasterboard?

TE - is tapered edge which is commonly used when a smooth finish is required.

SE - is square edge, this straight edge creates a butt joint, and this plastrboard is used where a smooth finish isn't as necessary
