Our Expert Says:

50mm Kingspan Thermafloor® TF70 is the thickness most commonly specified for solid concrete and suspended timber ground floors where a straightforward, well-proven general-purpose spec is needed. It sits in genuine mainstream territory, offering a useful step up in thermal resistance over 40mm while remaining easy to source and handle, and it's compatible with underfloor heating systems in both solid and suspended constructions. Built on the same 0.022 W/mK PIR core and composite foil facings as the rest of the TF70 range, it works equally well below a slab, below a screed or between joists. A dependable choice for new-build and refurbishment ground floors alike. Click for our full review

Product Description

50mm Kingspan Thermafloor® TF70 is a rigid polyisocyanurate (PIR) insulation board for solid concrete and suspended timber ground floors, and the thickness most commonly reached for once a project moves beyond the entry-level 40mm board. It's a mainstream specification point, striking a balance between thermal performance and ease of handling that suits the widest range of ground floor projects.

Each board measures 2400mm x 1200mm and covers 2.88m² per board, supplied 6 boards to a pack for 17.28m² of coverage. The rigid PIR core has a declared thermal conductivity of 0.022 W/mK, giving a thermal resistance of 2.25 m²K/W at 50mm, taken from Kingspan's printed thermal table. A declared compressive stress of 120 kPa at 10% compression means the board holds up under most unreinforced floor screeds.

Every board carries a low-emissivity composite foil facing, autohesively bonded to both faces of the PIR core during manufacture. As with the rest of the TF70 range, this facing isn't a vapour control layer in its own right: where the build-up needs one, that's a separate polythene sheet laid above the insulation. What the foil adds is extra thermal resistance to any adjacent unventilated air space, on top of the insulation value of the core.

50mm TF70 is designed for use below a solid concrete slab, below a floor screed, or between suspended timber joists on treated softwood battens, saddle clips or partially driven nails, and it must always be laid over a damp proof membrane. It's also compatible with underfloor heating systems, whether that's a solid concrete build-up where the insulation sits below the slab or screed, or a suspended timber floor where the heating pipes run above the board. That flexibility, combined with its everyday thermal performance, makes 50mm a natural default for ground floor specification across both new-build and refurbishment projects.

Key Benefits of 50mm Kingspan Thermafloor TF70:

  • Rigid polyisocyanurate (PIR) insulation board, 2400mm x 1200mm, 2.88m² per board
  • Thermal conductivity of 0.022 W/mK
  • Thermal resistance of 2.25 m²K/W
  • The most commonly specified general-purpose thickness in the TF70 range
  • Compressive stress of 120 kPa at 10% compression
  • Low-emissivity composite foil facing bonded to both faces of the core
  • Compatible with underfloor heating systems in solid and suspended constructions
  • Suitable for solid concrete and suspended timber ground floors
  • Sold 6 boards to a pack, covering 17.28m² per pack
  • Manufactured to BS EN 13165: 2012 + A2: 2016

Good to Know:

  • Mainstream specification thickness: 50mm is where TF70 becomes the default choice for a wide range of ground floor projects.
  • Works with underfloor heating: suitable for both solid concrete and suspended timber floors incorporating underfloor heating systems.
  • Foil facing is not a VCL: where the build-up calls for a vapour control layer, that's a separate polythene sheet laid above the insulation.
  • Must be laid over a DPM: TF70 should never sit in direct contact with subsoil.

Whether it's going below a slab, below a screed or between joists, 50mm Kingspan Thermafloor TF70 offers dependable, everyday thermal performance for the ground floors most projects call for.

Product FAQs

Can you paint straight onto PIR boards?

No, if you are using PIR as a wall insulation, we recommend using plasterboard

and a plaster like British Gypsum Thistle Multi Finish Plaster 25kg

once the wall is plastered then you can decorate.

Is cutting PIR insulation messy?

If you need to cut your PIR to fit a particular size, then be aware it can be a messy job. Make sure any floor is covered you can use floor protection

If the PIR board has a foil facing do I need DPM?

When using PIR insulation as a floor insulation, you will need a DPM, you can shop DPM rolls here

Does the PIR board have writing on?

Yes, the PIR board normally has the manufacturers name written on it.

I need to cut my PIR does it have any lines to ensure a straight cut?

Yes the PIR board has grid lines to enable you to cut it correctly.

Can you stick PIR boards straight to the wall?

No, the boards can't be attached directly to the wall, you need to place wooden battens to the wall to affix the PIR. It is recommended that you have at least a 50mm air gap between the wall and the insulation

Are PIR boards foil faced?

Yes PIR insulation boards are foil faced on both sides

What is the thermal conductivity of PIR?

PIR has a low thermal conductivity (0.022 W/mK) to optimize energy savings.

What is PIR?

PIR stands for polyisocyanurate and is a rigid foam board insulation. It is a closed cell foam structure

Thermal Performance

Thermal performance helps show how effectively the product reduces heat transfer.

Thermal conductivity measures how readily heat passes through the material, so lower figures generally indicate better insulating performance.

R Value shows the material’s thermal resistance at that thickness, so higher figures generally mean stronger insulation performance.

These figures relate to the insulation product itself and should be considered alongside the full wall, roof or floor build-up when checking project requirements.

Thermal Conductivity:
0.022 W/mK
R Value:
2.25 m²K/W
Physical Properties

Compressive strength shows how well a product resists being squashed under pressure.

The figure is measured in kPa, which stands for kilopascals.

A higher kPa number means stronger resistance to compression. For example, 120 kPa offers more compression resistance than 70 kPa, but less than 150 kPa, 200 kPa or 300 kPa.

This does not mean the product can carry that load on its own. It should always be checked as part of the full floor, wall, roof or system build-up.

Compressive Strength:
140 kPa
Fire Performance

Euroclass reaction to fire is the European EN 13501-1 classification used to show how a construction product behaves when exposed to fire.

The main scale runs from A1 and A2 at the highest end, through B, C, D and E, down to F.

A1 is non-combustible and A2 is limited combustibility, while lower classes indicate a greater contribution to fire.

Euroclass F is the lowest rating on this scale and indicates the weakest reaction-to-fire performance.

This is different from fire resistance, which relates to how long a complete wall, floor or roof build-up can resist fire.
