Types of Acoustic Insulation

Acoustic Insulation Slabs

Slabs are the most popular choice for party walls, separating floors, and stud partitions. They friction-fit between timber studs and floor joists without fixings or specialist tools. Rockwool RWA45 is the UK's most widely used acoustic slab, available from 25mm to 100mm thick. For applications needing maximum performance, Knauf Rocksilk RS45 and RS60 offer higher densities for greater sound blocking.

Acoustic Insulation Rolls

Rolls suit larger areas and irregular joist or stud spacing, with less cutting and less waste than slabs. Knauf Acoustic Roll uses a bio-based binder that makes it softer and less itchy to handle, which is a good solution for DIY installations. Superglass Acoustic Partition Roll comes pre-cut to 600mm widths, fitting standard stud centres straight from the pack.

Benefits of Acoustic Insulation

Reduce Noise Transmission - Block airborne and impact noise between rooms and properties

Building Regulations Compliance - Meet Approved Document E requirements (45dB DnTw minimum)

Dual Thermal Benefits - Excellent thermal insulation (0.034-0.038 W/mK) alongside acoustic performance

Fire Safety - Euroclass A1 non-combustible mineral wool for maximum fire protection

Quick Friction - Fit Installation - No fixings required, slots between studs and joists

Moisture Resistant - Water-repellent stone wool and glass wool maintains performance

Improved Privacy - Create peaceful, comfortable living and working environments
Cost-Effective Soundproofing - Affordable solution for reducing unwanted noise

Where to Use Sound Insulation

Party walls between terraced and semi-detached properties are the most common application. Building Regulations Approved Document E requires a minimum 45dB sound insulation (DnTw) for separating walls. Install 100mm Rockwool RWA45 or Knauf Acoustic Roll between timber studs in party wall constructions, combined with two layers of acoustic plasterboard on resilient bars for maximum sound reduction. For masonry party walls, add 50-100mm acoustic insulation within the cavity to improve acoustic performance.

Separating floors between flats and apartments need to address airborne noise (conversation, TV, music) and impact noise (footsteps, furniture). Mineral wool between joists handles airborne sound and can be paired with acoustic underlay for impact performance.

Internal partitions between bedrooms, a home office or bathrooms benefit from 50–100mm acoustic insulation for real privacy between rooms. Particularly effective in open-plan conversions, loft apartments, and home offices where acoustic privacy is essential. Combine with acoustic plasterboard for enhanced performance.

Suspended timber floors in period properties amplify sound in the cavity beneath floorboards. Filling the joist void with 100mm mineral wool such as Rockwool RWA45 or Superglass APR absorbs sound and reduces resonance.

Choosing the Right Sound Insulation

The best type of sound insulation depends on your project and the level of noise reduction required.

For party walls and separating floors, choose higher-density slabs such as Rockwool RWA45 or Knauf RS60 to provide better sound absorption and help meet Building Regulations.

For internal stud walls, 50-100mm acoustic insulation is typically sufficient to improve privacy between rooms.

For larger areas or quick installation, acoustic rolls offer faster coverage with minimal cutting.

Don't Forget the Accessories

A complete sound insulation system is more than just the mineral wool. Resilient bar systems decouple plasterboard from the structure, preventing sound from travelling through the frame. GenieClip systems offer an alternative decoupling solution for walls and ceilings. Acoustic tapes and rolls seal gaps that let sound through. Acoustic adhesive and sealant secures and seals boards and membranes. Acoustic pipe lagging reduces noise from pipework running through walls and floors.

Getting these details right is often the difference between a system that performs well and one that disappoints.
