Creating an Insulated Outdoor Animal Home

Published: | Last updated:

It's no secret that our pets are an important part of the family, and when it comes to rabbits, guineapig and other smaller pets, approximately 1 million households across the UK have one. However, not everyone has the room (or the desire) to keep their pets inside, which is why it’s so important to get outdoor hutches ready for winter. Here we will guide you through the simple and easy steps to implement in order to keep your outdoor pets safe and warm through the colder months.

Did You Know:

Cold, damp hutches increase the risk of respiratory illness in rabbits and guinea pigs.

Insulating a hutch

Creating a safe environment for your rabbit or guinea pig to stay outside doesn’t have to be complicated. A well-insulated hutch can provide your pet with a stable, cosy environment all year round. They protect against cold winds in winter and draughts in the summer, which will make a big difference to your pet's health and happiness. The key is to create a hutch that protects against extreme temperatures while maintaining airflow.

How to insulate a hutch in winter

One of the first steps to take would be to raise your hutch off the ground. Doing this prevents the bottom of the hutch from touching a cold or damp floor, which makes for a much warmer environment. This can be done in a couple of different ways; one way is to use treated hardwood or strong metal legs to raise it to a similar level to a table. However, if you are looking for a quicker and easier way, you can do this simply by placing solid bricks underneath to raise it just enough to prevent damp from rising, but not too high that it becomes unstable.

After you have raised the hutch, you want to consider how you are going to insulate it. We recommend you add external insulation to prevent your pets from nibbling on the materials and becoming unwell. PIR Insulation Boards are ideal for this, as they are rigid but also still incredibly lightweight - meaning they don’t add any unnecessary weight and strain to your hutch. Once your insulation is in place, it’s vital you seal and cover the insulation to prevent it from getting wet by using some form of cladding or board - we recommend something like our OSB board, which comes in a variety of sizes and much like the PIR Insulation Boards, is still relatively lightweight.

Top Tips

  • Raise the hutch Keeping it elevated off the ground helps prevent damp and cold from seeping in.
  • Insulate externally Adding insulation to the outside helps retain warmth while protecting the structure.
  • Protect from moisture Use suitable materials to prevent rain and damp conditions from affecting insulation performance.
  • Ensure airflow Good ventilation helps prevent condensation and maintains a healthy environment.
  • Use a weatherproof cover that can be easily removed in warmer months This provides extra protection during cold weather while allowing flexibility when temperatures rise.
While you're protecting your pet from harsh weather, it’s important not to seal the hutch completely airtight so that your pet can still get good airflow and breathe properly.
Once you've got the main insulation sorted, just go back to your normal routine of keeping your pet cosy. Use proper rabbit bedding, which not only keeps them comfortable but also adds a bit of extra insulation and warmth.

The last step is waterproofing your insulated hutch. The best option is to grab a waterproof cover that's made specifically for hutches. If you don't have one of those, a tarp or roof sheet works too. Just make sure whatever you use is secured properly so it doesn't blow away in the wind or create wind pockets. You might want to weigh it down with some bricks or tie it off neatly to keep everything in place.
