Optimise your underfloor heating installation with Tekwarm XPS Versatile Routed UFH Board, a premium insulation board designed for efficiency and versatility. With its high compressive strength and textured surface for direct tile application, it's the perfect foundation for various flooring types in both new builds and retrofit projects.

The Tekwarm XPS Versatile Range

The Tekwarm XPS Versatile Range offers a simple and effective way to achieve a level, seamless floor finish when installing underfloor heating.

There are two main products, routed boards for underfloor heating pipes and unrouted boards for areas without underfloor heating pipes, both available in plain or foil-faced options.

How the boards work together

The routed boards (plain faced and foil faced) have either 12 or 16mm grooves accommodate underfloor heating pipes, allowing them to sit snugly within the insulation layer providing optimal heat distribution across your space. To complement the routed boards, we offer unrouted equivalents, also available in plain and foil-faced finishes. The purpose of these boards are to fill in those areas where the underfloor heating pipes aren’t required, such as beneath kitchen or bathroom cabinets, creating a uniformly level surface. This design versatility ensures that whether you're screeding an entire room or extending the floor finish into non-heated areas, the Tekwarm XPS Versatile Range provides a consistent finish across your space.

Key Features

  • Robust Compressive Strength: Boasts a high compressive strength of 200 kPa, ensuring reliable and durable performance under various types of flooring.
  • Direct Tile Application: The versatile textured face of the board allows for the direct application of flooring-grade tiles with flexible adhesive, simplifying the installation process.
  • Accommodates UFH Pipes: Grooved on one side to precisely fit 12mm or 16mm diameter underfloor heating pipes, ensuring organised and efficient heating pipe layout, and an even spread of heat throughout the floor.
  • Efficient Installation: Designed for quick and straightforward installation over a flat level subfloor with a suitable DPM, optimising the construction timeline.
  • Versatility in Use: Equally suitable for new build projects or retrofit installations, providing a versatile underfloor heating insulation solution across a broad spectrum of projects.
  • Readily Available: The standard pattern board and plain versions are usually in stock, facilitating quick delivery and ensuring project timelines are met.
  • Enhanced Durability: The durable XPS core withstands the rigors of installation and long-term use, maintaining its integrity and performance over time.
  • Low-Profile System Compatibility: Its design and composition make it ideal for low-profile heating systems, allowing for minimal floor height increase while achieving excellent thermal insulation.
  • Wide Flooring Compatibility: Whether it's tile, solid wood, laminate, or another flooring type, this board supports a wide range of finishes, giving you the freedom to choose the best option for your space.
  • Installation Flexibility: Whether installed on timber or concrete bases, the board's design accommodates various substrates, ensuring a seamless fit and optimal heating performance.

Installation Instructions

Preparing the Subfloor

Start by ensuring the subfloor is flat and level. Apply a suitable Damp-Proof Membrane (DPM) where necessary to protect the boards from moisture.

Timber Base Installation: For timber base

  • Secure each board with five Tekwarm mechanical fixings and washers.
  • Ensure fixings penetrate a minimum of 35mm into the substrate for optimal stability.

Concrete Base Installation: On concrete bases

  • Position the boards directly on the concrete surface.
  • Use a combed layer of flexible tile adhesive (S1 or equivalent) for adherence.
  • Depending on the surface, additional mechanical fixings may be required for secure placement.

Finishing the Installation

In most cases, flooring can be applied directly atop Tekwarm XPS Versatile UFH Boards without the need for an overlay board. However, flooring types may have specific requirements:

  • Wood and Laminate: Install these using a suitable underlay as per manufacturer instructions.
  • Flooring Grade Tiles: Use a combed layer of flexible S1 tile adhesive for tile application.
  • Other Finishes: Some finishes may necessitate a Tekwarm Overlay Board as a separating layer.

Important Notes

  • Adhere to all relevant local building codes and regulations.
  • For complex installations, or if uncertain, consulting a professional installer is advised.
  • Always follow the manufacturer's guidelines for Tekwarm XPS Versatile UFH Boards.

This streamlined approach ensures a comprehensive understanding and execution of the installation process, promoting an efficient, secure, and compliant underfloor heating system installation.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

What is XPS?

XPS (Extruded Polystyrene) is a high-performance insulation material known for its excellent thermal resistance, moisture resistance, and high compressive strength. It's ideal for underfloor heating systems due to these properties.

Why is compressive strength important?

Compressive strength is crucial as it indicates the material's ability to withstand load and pressure. A higher compressive strength, like 200 kPa for Tekwarm XPS, means the board can support heavier flooring finishes without deformation, ensuring durability and longevity of the underfloor heating system.

You have 4 different options, when should I choose each one?

The Tekwarm XPS Versatile Range consists of plain faced, and foil faced options of both routed and plain boards.

  • Routed Boards: Specifically engineered for underfloor heating, this board features pre-routed channels designed to snugly accommodate underfloor heating pipes. It eliminates the need for clips to secure the pipes, streamlining the installation process and enhancing the system's overall thermal performance.
  • Plain Boards: Available in the same thickness, the plain versions are designed to complement the routed versions for use in any areas underfloor heating pipes aren’t required, but a wall to wall level surface is required.

Whether you need the plain faced or foil faced options depends on your project's specific requirements:

  • Plain Faced Routed: Ideal for basic insulation requirements without additional thermal reflection under the heating system.
  • Foil Faced Routed: This variant adds a reflective foil layer to the standard routed XPS board, increasing thermal efficiency by reflecting heat upwards, making it ideal for projects where maximising heat retention and distribution is crucial.

When should I use this type of insulation over other options in the Tekwarm UFH Board range?

Choose Tekwarm XPS Versatile UFH Board for installations requiring a low profile system with robust moisture resistance, higher compressive strength, and compatibility with direct tile application.

Is XPS durable?

Yes, XPS is extremely durable. Its inherent moisture resistance and high compressive strength make it resistant to rot, mould, and fungal growth, ensuring it maintains its insulation properties over time without degradation.
