Thermal Insulation

For homeowners, the main objective of thermal insulation is to create a warm, comfortable, and healthy environment to live in during winter months. Effective insulation can dramatically reduce your energy usage and cut your power bills; and often it doesn’t have to cost a lot to start seeing these savings.

The priority of thermal insulation should be

  • 1)Ceiling
  • 2)Under floor
  • 3)Walls
  • 4)Windows

Quality insulation can make all the difference in your home, and unfortunately a large portion of homes in the UK have inadequate insulation or none at all. Some homes built before insulation became mandatory will have no insulation, or in some cases the material may have deteriorated to well below today’s standards.

Check your insulation

It’s easy to check your insulation, and if there is existing insulation in your ceiling or under your floors you should try and check it for the following;

  • Is it Dry?
  • Does it cover the whole area?
  • Are there gaps?
  • Is it thick?

Quality insulation is only as good as the installation of the product, and even a small gap can halve the performance.

R-Value

The quality of insulation is measured using an R-Value. The higher the value, the more effective it is in slowing the transfer of heat. Different homes and environments require different R-Values so it’s important to have a qualified person in to survey your home’s needs, in order to get the most out of your insulation.
