Rafter Insulation

Up to 30% of heating produced in a home escapes through un-insulated or a poorly insulated roof. Investing in high performing Rafter Insulation can not only save you money in reduced energy bills, but over time end up paying for itself over and over!

Do I need Rafter Insulation?

If you’re planning to make use of your attic space, or renovate it into an additional living space, your Rafter Insulation will need to meet strict building regulation standards. Generally, placing insulation in ceiling joists above the top floor will suffice if the room is for storage or other purposes. If you’re planning on making the room liveable, insulation will need to be placed at both joist and rafter level.

R-Value

The effectiveness of insulation is graded using an R-Value, which measures the amount of heat that is conducted through a structure. A low R-Value represents quality, correctly installed insulation – as it should not allow much heat to pass through. Homeowners insulating at rafter level should aim to achieve an R-Value of 0.20W/M₂ or better.

Installation

The depth of your rafters and the particular solution you’re looking for will determine what materials you will need for your situation. Most insulation products used for rafters are semi-rigid boards or glass/mineral fibre batts. It’s important to speak with a qualified and reputable specialist who can tell you what products you need to use to achieve the R-Value you desire. They should also be able to tell you if you qualify for any help in the form of funding or government heating grants to aid in the cost of your Rafter Insulation.

Some considerations you may want to speak to your contractor about before committing to purchase installation include;

  • Any ventilation issues your home may have that may cause issues.
  • How much insulation you will need to install to achieve your desired results.
  • Fire resistance of their particular product.
  • Guarantees and lifespan of their products.
  • Additional work that may be your responsibility to undertake before or after installation, to ensure optimum performance of the product.
