Do I Need Loft or Roof Insulation?
If you aren’t planning to use your loft for living or storage purposes, then loft insulation is very straight forward. You won’t need to insulate the roof, and loft insulation is very easy to install.
If you’re planning to use your loft as a storage or living space however, you will need to insulate the roof as well as the loft. This is what discourages most home owners, as it can become more complicated, expensive and time consuming. There is a minimum 270mm requirement of insulation thickness which means the insulation would need to be installed between joists, with a layer of insulating board over the top. Another option is to raise the level of the floor leaving enough room for your insulation beneath the new floor.
Fitting Loft Insulation.
Whichever way you decide to go it is important not to compress or squash the insulation when fitting into tight areas or beneath floorboards. This greatly reduces the insulation’s depth and properties. It is important the insulation is not coming into contact with chimneys, flues or light fittings and that you accommodate some areas for ventilation to avoid condensation.
