Foil insulation

Its light-weight and flexible elements make Foil Insulation appropriate to many areas, and in many different applications.

Aluminium is an extremely durable insulation medium, and we can see how adaptable and useful it is in almost every area of our home. Aluminium is more resistant to corrosions than other metals, and its exceptional reflectivity and heat conductivity make foil an ideal insulation material. Its attributes include;

  • Abundance (affordable)
  • Light weight, but strong
  • Moisture-proof
  • Malleable
  • Easy to install
  • Non-toxic
  • No nesting material for rodents and birds
  • No reduction in performance over time. (common concern with mass insulation)

Uses

Foil Insulation has often been used under timber suspended floors to create still air zones between joists. It achieves insulation through reducing heat transfer through open spaces, and is most effective in keeping buildings cool in sunny climates. Overtime, the foil loses its reflectivity and performance due to dust and dirt accumulating and tarnishing its shine.

There are many advantages to foil insulation and it’s a great, cost effective insulation option. If you live in a cooler climate you may need to consider additional options to up the performance of foil, rather than using it on its own. It is not an insulating material in its own right, so it is recommended you have a professional survey your property to determine the specific needs for your home and environment.
